Ideally, you want every server and workstation to have its own unique, cryptographically complex password for the common administrator account. Furthermore, you want this password to change regularly and also be recoverable by authorized users when necessary. With this architecture, at most, only a single machine can be compromised, and no common peer-level network access is available.

Some companies ignore this problem at their own peril (saying, “this can never happen in our company…”). Other companies try to write scripts, but can actually make the problem worse by neglecting to log actions, use proper encryption, make passwords available for recovery, and deal with the issue of scalability.

Lieberman Software, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, provides a suite of privileged password management solutions for the enterprise. Random Password Manager is a SQL Server-based product that provides periodic randomization (fully audited) of common local administrator and root account passwords on all of your systems. A delegated web-based interface allows your Help Desk to recover the most current randomized passwords as needed. Once they have completed their IT tasks – such as installing applications or device drivers – the password is checked in and automatically spun to create a new, unique account. Installation of this product upgrades your enterprise to the best practices necessary for compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA, PCI, SEC and all other mandated security standards.

Smaller organizations can utilize our award-winning product User Manager Pro Suite, with its Random Password Generator tool, to force periodic account password randomization.

All of these products provide extensive auditing, auto-retry of off-line systems, scheduled operations, web access, rapid operation, encryption, access control and more. All backed with the best technical support in the industry.

To learn more about common account credentials and how they can be one of the most dangerous flaws in your organization's security, contact our account managers for further information and to view a demonstration. All of our account managers are Microsoft Certified Professionals (MCPs) and understand the technical challenges you face in your daily job.
