Organizations that have developed COM+, MTS and DCOM components for use in their server farms find that reporting on and managing the identities used by these components on more than one or two machines is an impractical endeavor. Instead, they tend to freeze the credentials used by these objects because doing otherwise would cause problems. However, the best security practices require that credentials be changed every 30 days, a difficult policy to implement with machines using COM+, MTS and DCOM components.
With COM+ Manager, administrators now have the ability to see and manage all of the identity information on all of their components/systems in a single view. They can see the places an identity is used on all systems and then change it in a single operation. Changes to component identities on all managed systems can be accomplished via a few mouse clicks, leading to a more efficient use of IT resources and making mass management of component identity practical.
